Bezzera New Hobby Espresso Machine in Red

Bezzera New Hobby Overview

The Bezzera New Hobby is a semi-automatic espresso and coffee machine with impressive performance for its range, equipped with a 3-way solenoid valve, a commercial-grade group head, commercial standard 58 mm portafilter, and an 8.4 fluid oz eco brass boiler that’s bursting with steam power.

Features and Performance

The New Hobby features a lot of the industry essentials, which is great for such a small machine. The 58mm portafilter, commercial grade group, and commercial style steam wand offer quality tools in crafting your own coffee drinks at home. Plus, the 3-way solenoid valve will keep your used coffee pucks dry for easy discarding (a feature you don’t typically find in machines of this size).

We have a lot of latte drinkers here at the office, so when we started preparing drinks it was quickly decided that the Hobby’s steaming capability is its most impressive feature. To see steam explode from such a small machine is something you really need to see. For more control, we worked with Bezzera to have this version of the Hobby include a commercial steam wand. Also deserving special mention is the dedicated button for the pump for manually refilling the boiler after extended steaming.

We purchased the Hobby based upon Mark’s recommendation of entry level machines. I did a lot of research before we made our purchase. Even though there weren’t a lot of reviews of this particular machine, Mark’s demo sold me. The Hobby is very well made and the learning curve is short. It took a week to get the grind right and once I did I have beRead more about review stating What a machine!en pulling consistently good shots every time. I use a leveler instead of a tamper and I find it is easier to get consistent quality shots with the leveler. You will love the steam function. The instructions that come with the machine are easy to follow. In short, the Hobby makes excellent espresso. I highly recommend this machine.

Great coffee and great looking machine, but after two weeks of use I am still struggling to prevent the high limit thermal switch from tripping. The steaming phase seems to be the culprit, but even when I follow the instructions to the letter which includes pumping water back into the boiler right after steaming, the switch will trip often (one ouRead more about review stating Great coffee, but fussy boiler temperature controlt of five times making coffee).
I have not found yet a permanent solution for this or ways to improve my technique, so I end up manually resetting the switch, which is easy enough. Disappointing for this price point, but I will continue trying to get it right.

I had an Italia Saeco from about 15 years ago that finally busted. Decided on something a little more manual to replace it. Let’s start with the aesthetics: WOW. In any color, this is a good looking machine. In red, this is WOW. What I really like is that the cleanup is a breeze. Goodby stainless with its streaks, finger prints, smudges, etc. One Read more about review stating One Word: WOWwipe and this is clean. Now the important part: coffee. I was drinking Americanos almost exclusively with an occasional espresso shot. My first order of business was to emulate the perfection of the Italia’s Americano. It took me a while to learn what with all the variables, but I have far surpassed what I thought was the perfect cup of coffee on the Italia. All those flavor words on a bag of beans? Yeah, now I can actually taste those too. My Americano is second to none. All I can say is WOW. I add a pour of heavy whipping cream to the Americano and it’s straight to heaven. And I haven’t even tried the milk based drinks yet… Wow
