Bezzera Unica Overview
The Bezzera Unica is a rugged espresso machine with an old-world personality that speaks to people who really love espresso. The standout feature of the Unica is its PID. The PID controller moderates the boiler temperature for both steaming and brewing, giving the Unica great temperature stability and the ability to tinker for anyone who wants a more nuanced extraction from specialty coffee.
Features and Performance
Now, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a single boiler machine, which means the Unica uses a single boiler for brewing and steaming. A little extra patience is required when switching from brewing to steaming while the boiler heats up. With that said, the Unica is well-built with a 3-way solenoid valve, a vibration pump, and the iconic E61 group head made of chrome-plated brass. The machine comes with a multi-directional steam wand with a joystick control and a two-hole steam tip, as well.
With the addition of flow control, you can have more control than ever over how you pull your shots. By changing the flow of the water to your portafilter, you can customize your preinfusion for perfectly saturated pucks and experiment with different flow profiles to match your taste preferences.

This is my first home espresso machine, so in some ways it’s been a battle of wills so far. I don’t think this would traditionally be considered an entry-level machine, but I didn’t want to be buying another machine in a year or two.

It is very elegant in presentation, but a real workhorse, with tight fitting metalwork, an easy-to-clean drip tray, and handles which are both stylish and strong. I am so happy with this machine, and I fully expect it to be in my household for a decade or more.

I almost gave this machine 4 stars but any pitfalls are me as the operator. It heats up super quick – 5 minutes for boiler temp and the portafilter needs just 10 seconds or so of running water to heat up if you don’t want to wait. The large water reservoir is a plus.
