JURA ENA 4 Super Automatic Espresso Machine Full Metropolitan Black

JURA ENA 4 Overview

The ENA 4 from JURA is a minimally designed, intuitive one-cup machine that grinds exceptionally fast in order to extract as much flavor as possible from your espresso. JURA’s Intelligent P.E.P., or Pulse Extraction Process, changes how coffee is brewed based on the drink selected, by pulsing water at different frequencies for espresso and espresso doppio. Not to mention, the ENA 4’s unique water tank adds a touch of tasteful asymmetry to this ultra-modern, chic machine.

Features and Performance:

The ENA 4 from JURA offers an affordable yet impressive super-automatic espresso experience. With the Intelligent Pulse Extraction Process, the machine optimizes extraction times for barista-level espresso shots. The ENA 4 makes four specialty drinks: espresso, coffee, espresso doppio, and café doppio. With the AromaG3 grinder’s conical burrs, beans are quickly ground upon request for each drink.

The ENA 4 has optional WiFi compatibility with the purchase of JURA’s wireless adapters. With that, the JURA ENA 4 can be connected to the J.O.E. app which allows users to activate their customized specialty coffees, and sends out alerts to top off beans and/or water.

Available in either Full Metropolitan Black, this machine is unbelievably chic and minimalist. The entire front face is flat, except for the brew spouts and chrome-colored drip tray. Even the 37oz water tank is fashionable: a tall cylinder on the side of the machine with a diamond-like pattern. The machine’s hopper holds 4.4 ounces of coffee, while keeping the machine’s height just above a foot tall.

I totally love the machine the can make great coffee and espresso, but has been in repairs twice 🙁

Bought this machine as I am plain out tired of the daily grind of my semi-auto Gaggia. I was really sold that the PEP extraction when making an espresso would yield a nice, flavorful shot, despite the relatively low dose size (10g max). I previously had purchased a Gaggia fully-automatic unit but the espresso was just way too weak for my liking, sRead more about review stating Still a bit weak despite PEPo it go returned in favor of my semi-auto and nice grinder, which I have been using daily for about the last year and a half. The semi-auto route can certainly yield a great espresso, but they are fussy and require a lot of fine-tuning…something I am just growing tired of dealing with. Unfortunately I am finding that the espresso from this unit, while better than what I got out of the Gaggia full-auto, is still a bit too weak, even at the strongest setting. I am not looking for a perfect shot out of any of these fully-auto machines, but all I am seemingly getting is a small cup of strong coffee instead of the more intense bite one craves out of a good shot of espresso. I am tempted to return this unit and spend a bit more for something like the E6 that has a much larger dose capacity (up to 16g compared to 10 with this one), but considering the price jump and the uncertainty of what I’ll get out of it, I am still weighing my options.

I will say that running a dopio on this machine at least gets me a rather decent cup of coffee when I want one, but that wasn’t what I was looking for when I ordered this.

Additionally, I had some issues with the initial setup of the water hardness and the filter. For whatever reason, the machine just wasn’t reading I had a filter installed. On power-up it would just show the red filter icon and not do anything after that. I called Tech Support and they believe I have a defective filter, so they are sending a new one. Fortunately after I hung up with them, it just finally decided to read the current filter and went through and did it’s initial purge and it’s worked fine since then. Other than that, usage of the machine is pretty straight forward and simple since it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of machines that do more than just basic coffee drinks. Looks pretty cool on the counter too!!

After pulling shots every day out of our Saeco Barista from Starbucks for 18 years, we decided it was time for a new machine. We wanted to only have espresso or Americano options and prepare our milk separately, which makes for a more straightforward machine and less parts that can break. The few quirks we’ll point out are simply to make the buyerRead more about review stating Smooth consistent shots but a few quirks aware it’s not a perfect machine. It’s not to deter you from buying it because I can we can live with them. Sometimes the beans don’t fall into the hopper as the shot is prepared and the shot comes out weak. It’s important to keep the hopper full as there’s no signal that says it’s time to refill the hopper. It’s also important to push the beans around a bit because air pockets form and again the beans don’t great ground in the right quantity making for a bad shot. The tray that removes from the machine has coffee grounds on the back side of it, which is an indication of “slippage” from the grinder. It’s not much, but it adds up and good coffee is lost that way. The machine is beautiful and easy to use, making perfect shots all the time if you ensure the water are hopper are filled up. The cleanup is pretty minimal too. As for longevity, I can’t say much since we’ve only had the machine for about 3 weeks. First impression is very good, but not quite great hence the 4 star.
