Profitec Pro 300 Overview

Profitec knows how to impress us. At first sight, the Pro 300 makes a lasting impression with its polished stainless steel exterior. The front panel of the machine sports a steam pressure gauge and Gicar PID controller, which lets us monitor steam pressure and temperature at a glance. The PID reigns in temperature stability to within a degree of the set temperature, and features a convenient shot timer for more precise pulls.

Features and Performance

Right off the bat we’re looking at a machine that’s easy to use and it’s pulling the shots we’re out to get. That’s a good start.

We like to look a little deeper, so we ran the Pro 300 through testing. Our technicians found remarkably quick warm up times of about 10 minutes, from power-on to brew-ready. We owe this to the brew boiler mounted directly above the brew group, which is passively heated as the machine warms up. If you want, you can switch off the steam boiler to save energy. On that note, steam performance is respectable and the two hole steam tip is perfect for high speed frothing, dispensing high pressure over a wide area.

The all copper and braided stainless steel high-pressure lines on the inside of the machine are a nice touch, as well, owing to Profitec’s thoroughly professional engineering. Plus, the vibration pump sits on rubber mounts so the machine stays quiet while brewing.

Context: upgraded from a Breville Barista Express to this machine and a Eureka Mignon Specialita grinder.

This machine warms up from cold to shots and steam in roughly 12 minutes. I usually give it 20 to heat the portafilter. Shot quality is exceptional, steaming is great for single drinks, and the workflow is simple.

I wanted anRead more about review stating Great little machine! upgrade from the BBE for a few reasons. First, the thump-thump-thump from the pump during steaming was obnoxious. Second, the grinder was wildly inconsistent at best. Finally, I wanted something that was built to last – more metal, less plastic. In all cases, the upgrade was exceptional. With the dual boilers, I can steam and pull shots at the same time. This means a latte takes a minute, rather than five.

The Pro 300 is quiet. The pump is better insulated than the BBE’s, so pulling shots is quieter and more pleasant. When warming up the machine there are ever-so-slightly audible bubbling sounds from the boilers. When steaming, the only sound is that of steam entering the milk – as it should be.

The Pro 300 has separate power switches for main power and the steam boiler. This is great for two reasons: first, I put the machine on a smart outlet to warm it up before I get up in the morning – it’s ready to go when I am. Second, the steam boiler can be turned off when not in use. On a typical morning I only drink espresso – I save the milk drinks for after work and weekends. This allows me to save some power (pennies a day, to be fair) running the machine.

The PID/shot timer is helpful and easy to use. The steam and hot water knobs are conveniently located and feel good in the hand. The steam wand has just enough mobility, and it’s at just the right height to steam directly into a small pitcher with one drink’s worth of milk sitting directly on the drip tray – no need to hold the pitcher in hand. I wish the hot water spout was moveable, but only for my peace of mind – it’s positioned right at the edge of the drip tray and I’d prefer to point it a bit inwards. The tactile experience of the brew switch leaves a bit to be desired – clunk, it’s brewing, clack, it stops. In that respect, it’s practical, functional, and designed for purpose. The machine is surprising small – much narrower than the BBE, a touch taller, and a smidge deeper. I feel like I gained counter space even with the addition of a separate grinder.

I’m a bit disappointed in the drip tray. It’s well made, but the edges are sharper than I’d like. Pulling it out to clean it leads to sharp edges scraping my fingertips. It hasn’t cut me (yet), but I think it could do with some sanding. I’d prefer the manufacturer do that before it was shipped.

I was juggling between this machine and the Pro 700. For half the cost, I think this machine does exactly what I need of it. The larger machine is plumbable, has larger boilers, and has a better tactile experience to be fair. But, for twice the price, I’d be waiting three times as long for the machine to warm up every morning. For now, I made the right decision. Perhaps I’ll change my mind and upgrade again a few years down the road.

  2. Jázmin Faragó

I’m madly in love with my Pro 300. Easy to pull great shots and it’s beautiful. It looks kind of plain in pics but is so much better looking in person. I’m getting the wooden knobs but it looks great as is.

  3. Adél Kerekes

The machine was brand new without so much as a scratch or a droplet of water to be found. Very happy with the purchase and prompt delivery.
