The Profitec Pro 500 PID with Flow Control follows in the footsteps of other machines from Profitec with tremendous performance and distinguished build quality without compromising on simplicity. The Pro 500 PID with Flow Control boasts commercial-grade parts and professional aesthetics while still managing to be easy-to-use. The updated version of the Pro 500 PID with Flow Control offers a level of performance we’ve seen in much more expensive machines and introduces a now visible PID and shot timer and striking new black pressure gauges.
Features and Performance
With the Pro 500 PID with Flow Control, you’ll get a heat exchanger machine that brews with a 2L stainless steel boiler and a powerful 1400W heating element, both of which are complemented by the iconic E61 brew group. For the second upgrade to the Profitec Pro 500 PID, Profitec implemented a flow control valve that the previous model did not have, helping this machine take a huge step forward.
This allows you to control the flow of water during extraction to get different flavors out of your coffee, really giving you the chance to appreciate the nuances of your favorite beans. By simply adjusting the knob, you have control over a longer or shorter pre-infusion and can modify the extraction parameters of your shot. It’s a simple change, but the effect can be profound.
In combination with the engineered thermosyphon system in the E61 group, the Pro 500 PID with Flow Control lends a level of temperature stability previously unheard of in a heat exchanger espresso machine. The need for cooling flushes is eliminated, removing a considerable limitation from this class of espresso machine. When set to a temperature of 256° Fahrenheit, pressure stabilizes for near indefinite steaming while eliminating the necessity of a cooling flush under most circumstances.
With the 2022 update of the Pro 500 with Flow Control, Profitec has moved the PID temperature display to make it easier to view. Before, the display was hidden behind the drip tray, but now it’s on the face of the machine. This will help you make sure your espresso machine is set at the correct temperature so you can brew with all of the exact settings that you want. In addition, the PID display now doubles as a shot timer and allows you to easily change other settings such as the programmable eco mode and backflush reminders.

This replaced my dying Breville as my first “real” espresso machine. It has taken some learning to dial in, but I am now extremely pleased with the machine!
Good:
– Flow control is a must have! I’ve been able to save out of control shots using flow control many times when changing beans or grind.
– Extremely heavy and solid constrRead more about review stating Built To Lastuction. I can tell this machine is built to last.
– Cool touch wand protects me from burning myself.
– Group head pre-heats and doesn’t require pre-flush before brewing.
– Large water reservoir
– Large and deep drip tray.
– Multiple pressure gauges and PID automatically shows temp and shot timing. Super useful!
Bad:
– Can be a bit awkward to refill water reservoir if you store this machine under cabinets.
– Takes roughly 20 mins to heat up before you can brew.
Overall, I’m quite satisfied with the machine. It was expensive for me, but it feels worth it to be able to make great espresso at home every day for the next 10 years. I highly recommend getting this one with flow control as I’ve been able to save many shots. If the flow starts too fast, you can just restrict it and if it goes to slow, you can open the flow up more. It’s a game changer.

I am just getting used to my Profitec, which is a step up from its predecessor, an Expobar Office Control. Still, I am very pleased with one niggling caveat, the Profitec’s water reservoir requires more frequent refilling than what I have been used to. Again, that is not a major ding. I truly am enjoying the machine.
