Bezzera BZ13 DE Overview

Now Includes a Bottomless Portafilter

The Bezzera BZ13 DE is an NSF certified, heat-exchanger espresso machine. The industrial charm paired with modern technology makes this semi-automatic a delight to work with. For starters, the BZ13 DE is ready to brew and steam straight out of the box thanks to the copper heat-exchanger boiler which can heat to brew temperature in just 8 minutes. This means that while you go through your morning routine and grind, level and tamp your coffee, the BZ13 will probably be ready to brew before you are.

Features and Performance

Heat-exchanger boilers are a big deal if you’re serious about your coffee. If you’re hosting guests and you’re making milk-beverages back-to-back, then a machine like the BZ13 DE is perfect for you and your lifestyle as you can brew and steam simultaneously. Add on the intuitive PID controller which doubles as a shot timer and you’ve got stable temperatures that you can change on the fly as needed. You’ll be able to directly control the temperature of the steam boiler, with the PID displaying the brew temperature offset displayed on the screen. The PID adds a degree consistency and control that accentuates the performance of the boiler for both powerful steam and stable brew temperatures.

I purchased the Bezzera BZ13 DE Espresso Machine along with the Bezzera BB005 Grinder about 4 months ago. I wanted to spend some time with it before giving it a review. This was a significant upgrade for me from the Gaggia Classic I had been using for several years. I will submit a separate review for the grinder.

I think the Bezzera BZ13Read more about review stating Love the BZ13 DE DE is a classically beautiful espresso machine to have in my kitchen. I love the fast heat time with the electronically heated BZ group. I love the fast heat up time. It is easy to operate and very easy to clean. The drip tray is easy to remove. There is plenty of volume in the water reservoir. It has a lot of steam pressure for frothing. HARFAN COFFEE has plenty of information and videos to learn and get the best from the machine.

It did take me a few weeks to really feel comfortable using the machine. I had to really learn the importance of coffee bean type, the correct espresso grind, brew time, etc. There is so much more steam pressure compared to the Gaggia Classic I had been using that it took me quite awhile to learn to get the silky smooth milk needed for good latte art. After the initial break in period with the new grinder, I switched to the permanently bottomless portafilter which I really like. Having the bottomless portafilter really helps seeing if there are problems with the extraction process.

As far as the operation, I really like the levers for the steam and hot water taps. The fully articulated commercial type steam wand works great for finding that perfect position for frothing milk.

I do use the Programmable Volumetric Brewing Buttons. Instead of programming the buttons for single and double shots, I program the buttons for different types of espresso bean. So I program the one shot button say for a medium dark roast and the two shot button for a dark roast. The one thing to be aware of is that brew time varies a little from one brew to the next. Usually a few tenths of a second to a whole second which will cause the volume of the shots to vary. I am not sure why it does that. It does seem that the program time will vary if there is a few tenths of a gram coffee difference between shots, tamping, the freshness of the coffee, etc. I have thought about submitting a question to HARFAN COFFEE to better understand the Programmable Volumetric Brewing Buttons better. I do use the program buttons on a daily basis and I reset the program time as needed, it is very easy to do. I periodically pull a shot on the scale to get the proper volume of espresso and the time needed.

When I first got the machine it seemed that the brew pressure was pretty high. It was about 13.8 bar with the blind filter basket. Following the HARFAN COFFEE video instruction I reset the pressure to about 11.4. I get about 10.9 to 11.0 bar when brewing now. I am not sure what pressure that gets me at the group head. Another question I have thought about asking HARFAN COFFEE

I really like this machine and it is a joy to use.

My previous Rocket Appartamento was starting to give me trouble after two years of consecutive usage and that’s when I started searching for a different HX machine. After some research and watching a bunch of HARFAN COFFEE videos, the Bezzera BZ13 was the perfect choice. Buying a brand new Heat Exchanger all over again didn’t seem right with me. It was eithRead more about review stating Blows aways my previous HX – Rocket Appartamentoer stick with same old outdated technology in guessing how truly hot my espresso was. However, I love the ability of pulling shots and steaming milk all the same time, but didn’t want to spend huge amounts on a double boiler machine. After finding out that HARFAN COFFEE offered a Heat Exchanger machine with a PID, I was blown away. You get the best of worlds with this machine! I have been able to pull consistent delicious shots of espresso ever since receiving this machine, it’s miraculous. I highly recommend this machine if you’re interested in steaming and pulling shots at the same time, but at an affordable price with consistent results. The PID really makes this machine 100% worth it,

I love the quick heat up time so it’s not wasting as much energy before pulling a shot. I think it’s less than 8 mins. Also love the rose wood accents. The temp gauge turns into a shot time when the pump starts which is very useful. It heats up milk very quickly. I wish it came with a bigger tamper. The one it comes with is hard to get a consistenRead more about review stating Heats up quick!t shot with. I bought a 58.5mm tamper that works great. I’m not sure I’ll actually need the programmable buttons for shot time so I could have saved a little money there.

I am opening a very small coffee and sandwich shop with a smaller budget. After doing my research, this machine met my space requirements as well as my budget. This is the first “professional” machine, so there was a learning curve for me. It took about 1lb of coffee and a carton of milk to get that perfect 9 bar level and foam I needed for the peRead more about review stating I love this machine!rfect Italian Espresso and Cappuccino. So far, I am absolutely thrilled with this machine! It suits my needs and it’s beautiful.

The machine arrived in great conditions and is totally functional. We’re really enjoying our morning espresso with a creamy result and absolutely appreciate its fast heating feature! The manual that comes with the machine is very helpful, the machine looks minimalist and it’s just what we expected.
